Tell others about Jesus like John Wycliffe did:

Though not all Christians are called to the ministry of Bible Translator, we are all called by God to share our faith (witness) with those who are not Christians.  Some Bible verses that you will find helpful for doing this, and that you may want to commit to memory are found on other pages on our  web site (see: Memory Verses; 2nd Set: Salvation!, Plan of Salvation, and Statement of Faith). _________________

Movie Review: John Wycliffe: The Morning Star _______________

He wanted to bring God to the common people, but the Church wouldn't let him.

Scholar, Bible Translator, Church Reformer

In late summer 1345, fifteen-year-old John Wycliffe left his cottage in Yorkshire, England, to walk two-hundred miles to Oxford University.  His father had declared john too frail to become a farmer and sent him to study for the priesthood.  It was a walk that would forever change the world, as each step brought John Wycliffe closer to his call as scholar, Bible translator, and church reformer.

At Oxford, John burned with a desire to make God's word accessible to every individual.  The Bible was then written only in Latin, and so scarce were copies that most parish churches in England did not have one!  Even more seriously, common people were banned by order of Rome from reading Scripture.

Common People Were Banned by Order of Rome from Reading Scripture

Despite heated opposition from church leaders, John Wycliffe pursued his mission to make God's Word available to all.  His strong words and reform efforts shook the very foundation of the Church---he was challenged in public debates, branded a heretic, and pursued for persecution.

What would be John Wycliffe's fate at the hands of an adversarial Church?  How would this battle affect the future of countless people around the world?

Our Comments:

John Wycliffe also founded the Lollards: a Christian religious Order and preaching movement that brought Revival to England in his generation.  It was sort of a Protestant (200 years before there were Protestants!) Franciscan type of Order for Evangelism.  In fact, it reminds us of our own calling with the Knights of Prayer  John Wycliffe greatly influenced his Bohemian Students (Moravians), who influenced John Hus, Count Zinzendorf, and almost everyone else in Christian History, especially John Wesley and the later Worldwide Missionary Movement of the 1800's.
