1856-1928 R. A. Torrey was an American evangelist and Bible scholar, a graduate of Yale College and Seminary (Yale University and Divinity School). He was ordained to the Congregational ministry in 1878, and became Superintendant of the Congregational Missionary Society of Minneapolis. He had a long association with D. L. Moody and was the first Superintendant of The Moody Bible Institute (1889-1908). He wrote over forty devotional and theological books. He was chosen to follow D. L. Moody in Moody's Evangelism Ministry. After a ministry as an Evangelist, R. A. Torrey was Pastor of The Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles, a position that was later held by J. Vernon McGee (Thru the Bible Radio Program). _________________ The Power of Prayer Copyright © 1924 by Fleming H. Revell Co. A Zondervan Publication Zondervan Publishing House A Division of

Tell others about Jesus like R. A. Torrey did: Though not all Christians are called to the ministry of an Evangelist, we are all called by God to share our faith (witness) with those who are not Christians. Some Bible verses that you will find helpful for doing this, and that you may want to commit to memory are found on other pages on our web site (see: Memory Verses; 2nd Set: Salvation!, Plan of Salvation, and Statement of Faith). _________________ |
Author: R. A. Torrey R. A Torrey was chosen by Dwight Moody to be the first Superintendent of Moody's new Bible School, now known as the Moody Bible Institute. When Moody unexpectedly died during an evangelistic campaign, Torrey was chosen to be his successor, continuing D. L. Moody's evangelistic ministry. Tapping the Unlimited Power of God The Power of Prayer is the classic handbook on tapping the unlimited power of God. It discusses the freedom, peace, and security available through communication with God and answers common questions about prayer:
No other book so clearly outlines the positives of prayer, the prerequisites to prayer, the purpose of prayer, or the power of prayer. A. Torrey R. A. Torrey ministered with, and was inspired by, Dwight L. Moody. "How To Pray" is the powerful book that sparked revival worldwide, particularly in Australia, and Wales. Torrey sent 100 copies to Wales and they were passed from one person to another. The books inspired a nation-wide prayer movement. The Welsh Revival, Rees Howells After a year of intense prayer everywhere throughout Wales, the Welsh Revival occurred. Out of this came Rees Howells who was inspired by George Müller and his life of Faith. George Müller, E. M. Bounds Müller pastored a Church, spent sixteen years as an Evangelist world-wide, founded 217 Christian Schools, supported Foreign Missions (including Hudson Taylor's China Inland Mission), and founded and supported orphanages for three thousand orphans. __________________________ |
__________________________________ What is truly inspiring, however, is that George Müller accomplished all of this through faith and prayer, never asking anyone for money, but only making his needs known to God. Monk Preston, Monk Linda, and The Prayer Foundation ™ These two men, along with the writings on prayer of E. M. Bounds were the inspiration for Monk Preston being drawn to prayer, and with Monk Linda co-founding The Prayer Foundation ™. It is due to the inspiration of George Müller that The Prayer Foundation ™ (although totally supported by free-will contributions) does not ask for money or send out mailings asking for donations, but only goes to God in prayer for the needs of this ministry. ______________________________________ "How To Pray" versus "The Power of Prayer" R. A. Torrey's book: How To Pray was expanded by Torrey into the book, The Power of Prayer. If you are a "reader" like us, you will want to read the expanded The Power of Prayer. If you are not a "reader," you may prefer the much shorter How To Pray. Its smaller size also makes it an excellent gift book for those you would like to bless with one of the truly Classic works on Prayer. __________________________________ Related Pages: _____________________________ See the Section of books on Prayer on our page: ______________________________ Copyright © 2007 S.G.P.
