1st Set: Where To Begin?  The Basics.

Memory Verses: The Lord's Prayer; John 3:16; Psalm 23

"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."  -Psalm 119:11

Choose the Bible Version or Versions that you will Memorize From: Why Memorize Scripture?

The Monks of The Prayer Foundation  memorize verses from the King James Version of the Bible. We use this Version because in most cases we feel it expresses more to the point, and better, the content of each verse (we also feel it is the most beautiful and poetic version).  Because we pray the Psalms together out loud from memory, as a part of our group worship service to God, it is necessary that all of us learn from the same version.  However, we have found that some verses are easier to understand in other versions, and their translation benefits from more recent scholarship.  The fact is, there are are several excellent Versions of the Bible, and you may prefer using a different one.  The New International Version, and The New American Standard Version are often highly recommended for accuracy and clarity.  If your Church uses another particular Version, you may prefer to memorize from that one.  You also may find that you prefer a modern version for your daily Bible Reading and Bible Study because it is clearer and easier to understand.

Where To Begin?

Keep in mind that these are only suggestions.  You may already have a favorite Verse, or The Holy Spirit may have brought to your attention a particular Verse for a specific reason in your life.  These may then be the Verse or Verses you that you choose to memorize first.

The Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13)

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come.  Thy will be done,

On Earth, as it is in Heaven

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive those that trespass against us

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, Forever and ever.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

If you only memorize one individual verse, consider John 3:16, which sums up the message of the entire Bible:

John 3:16

"For God so loved the World, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  -John 3:16

If you only memorize one Psalm, consider: Psalm 23.

Psalm 23

A Psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul:

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;

Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine  enemies:

Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of  my life:

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
