Postulant Lay Monks: 8th Month The Nicene Creed is a "pastiche" of Holy Scriptures (See: Nicene Creed: Scripture Basis; What All Christians Believe in Common: Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant; and Statement of Faith of The Prayer Foundation ™) based on the earlier "Rule of Faith" said to be those Scriptures taught by the Apostles to be the essence of basic, essential Christian Doctrine (what C.S. Lewis referred to as Mere Christianity). We Monks here recite the Nicene Creed daily, and highly recommend this practice for all Christians. Our webpage Nicene Creed: Scripture Basis contains our comments concerning it. This is the version which we use. If your Church uses a slightly different English translation, you may prefer to memorize that particular version. ___________________________________________________________ The Nicene Creed (First Half) I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made. Who, for us all for our salvation, came down from Heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; ____________________________________________________________ See Also:

The Nicene Creed is the only creed accepted by all three major branches of Christianity: Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant. It was adopted by a general Council of the entire Church (Ecumenical) in 325 A.D., and revised by a general council of the entire Church in 381 A.D. Traditional liturgical worship always includes the Nicene Creed whenever there is Communion. It is a corporate proclamation that corresponds to the Schema (“Hear, O Israel, the Lord thy God is one”) in synagogue liturgy. "In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, love." “...that which has been believed everywhere, always, and by all.” -Vincent of Lerins (450 A.D.) "...we make our own the profession of the faith that we carry in our heart...We have the catholic faith in the creed, known to the faithful and committed to memory, contained in a form of expression as concise as has been rendered admissible by the circumstances;" -St. Augustine of Hippo |
