John Hus Died Singing, July 6, 1415 The History Books make little mention of this Bohemian Priest and scholar who lived 100 years before Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Yet, John Hus was convinced that the Bible should be presented in the language of the people, that salvation comes by faith in Jesus Christ, and the Word of God is the final authority. He taught openly in the University of Prague and as a pastor, challenging the abuses of medieval Christendom.
Intrigue and false promises weave a powerful story of one man's commitment to faith in Jesus Christ. In the end, Hus was accused, imprisoned, and charged with heresy. Ultimately, he was condemned and burned at the stake as a heretic. (-From the Video's Back Cover) _____________________________ Our Comments: John Hus (1369-1414 A.D.), a Roman Catholic Priest in Bohemia, while translating some sermons of John Wycliffe, became convinced of the universal priesthood of all believers; that Christ, not Peter, was the foundation of the Church, and that only Christ is the head of the Church. He was granted a safe conduct to defend his views, but was instead imprisoned and burned at the stake. He was a "Protestant" 100 years before Martin Luther. His witness influenced the later founding of the Moravian Brethren (Bohemian Brethren, Unitas Fratrum) in 1457. John Hus was influenced by the writings of John Wycliffe. Although this relatively short film (55 Min.) obviously does not have a happy ending, it helps us to see the need for "counting the costs" regarding our Faith, and shows us that the persecution we suffer is mild compared to that suffered by many of the heroes of our Faith, and many Christians in various countries around the world today (see: Worldwide Persecution of Christians). We have decided to watch it yearly every July 6th. -The Prayer Foundation ™ ____________________________ |
