One of the Church's Greatest Chroniclers They called him "Venerable." The "Venerable Bede" was the first great English historian, who lived and worked in Jarrow and whose writings survive as a testament to the wisdom and creativity of his time. It is thanks to the life's work of Bede that we have such an accurate account of what proved to be Northumbria's Golden Age. He was practically born a monk, entering the monastery of Wearmouth when only seven. He never travelled far, but his writings have reached the ages. Thomas Fuller described Bede as "the profoundest scholar of his age." This video provides an insightful introduction to Bede and takes us to the original locations associated with his life, work, and writings. (-from the Video's Back Cover). Our Comments: "Bede is known as 'The Father of English History.' He was the first English Historian. He was also the first to translate any portion of the Bible into English. It is from his book: Ecclesiastical History of the English People that almost all of what we know about Aidan and Cuthbert is found. Anyone interested in the lives of these missionary monks of Lindisfarne, or interested in The Venerable Bede will want to see this Documentary." -The Prayer Foundation ™ ______________________________ |
