Featuring an Academy Award winning performance by Sidney Poitier (Best Actor: 1963). Nominated for four additional Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress (Lilia Skala) Best Cinematography; and Best Adapted Screenplay. "A gem of a motion picture." -Los Angeles Times "A funny, sentimental, charming and uplifting film." -Hollywood Reporter ...five impoverished nuns. Homer Smith (Sidney Poitier), an itinerant handyman, is driving through the Arizona desert when he meets five impoverished nuns. Stopping to fix their leaky roof, Homer discovers that not only will the Mother Superior not pay him for the job, but she also wants him to build their chapel---for free! ...leaving that town a much better place than when he found it. Hesitant at first, Homer soon finds himself single-handedly raising the Chapel and the financing. But although he will not receive a monetary reward, Homer knows that when his work is done, he'll leave that dusty desert town a much better place than when he found it. ____________________________ See Also: _______________________________ |
Our Comments: A very enjoyable Movie showing Christian virtues (with humor) of mutual aid with a truly appealing mixed cast: a black star (Poitier playing a Baptist), female immigrant German Nuns, a bigoted white Businessman, and Hispanic locals (an entire congregation, one lapsed). Even a little bit of Scripture (how did that ever slip past the Hollywood of the 60's?), though not very much. ____________________________ Lilies of the Field DVD ... is available as a Free Gift to those making a contribution for the support of The Prayer Foundation ™.
